Western Christians first celebrated Christmas on December 25 in 336,
after Emperor Constantine had declared Christianity the empire's favored
religion.
No one really knows when Christ was born.
The pagans celebrated Dec 25th as they worshipped the sun and the sun started to return and grant more sunshine during the day.
It does seem you need a holiday during this dark and depressing time of the year.
